Lists! Yearlist 2012 – the ones that did not make it

This morning i made a shortlist of albums that made an impression on me this year. Some will make it to my yearlist, most won’t. So here are some of the ones that won’t. There is no use for this list just that i like making lists, and i hope it turns people to music they might not have heard before.

Christian Mistress – Possession

Far from a bad album, but i like their Agony & Opium album better. Old school heavy metal.

Conan – Monnos

Like Christian Mistress, far from being a bad album. I actually quite enjoyed it when it came out but their Horseback Battle Hammer album made a bigger impression on me.

Horseback – Half Blood

Bit of an odd album, ‘black western doom’ or something, it has some really great songs but also a few dull ones.

Pallbearer – Sorrow and Extinction

At first i thought this would be in my top 5 of the year, and while still a great album i noticed i haven’t listened a lot to it anymore the past couple of months. Looking forward seeing them at Roadburn tho.

Kadavar – Kadavar

Their Creature of the Demon song is magnificent, the rest of the album just doesn’t really reaches that level unfortunately.

Toundra – III

Great instrumental metal album (let’s avoid the post-rock tag here) that is both technical and interesting enough to last a whole album.

Process of Guilt – Faemin

Post-metal from Portugal in the vein of Minsk, Isis, Neurosis. Definitely worth your while.

Unsane – Wreck

I really like this band, but in moderation as it’s a really intense (noisy!) listen.

Dragged Into Sunlight – Widowmaker

I loved their sick and twisted Hatred for Mankind album, the blackened doom/deathmetal (or the deathened doom/blackmetal) and the muddy production. This album sounds quite different from that, it seems more structured and ‘cleaner’, although i’m sure a lot of people not used to this kind of music disagree. At first i was rather disappointed but it’s starting to grow on me, just not enough to make it to the mainlist.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!

This literally came out of nowhere and got me rather psyched to say the least as i love this band and all their previous releases. But it turned out to be a bit of a letdown, the songs don’t seem to have that epic build that they are familiar for and the two drone-y songs are pretty much non-memorable.

Mono – For My Parents

Beautiful, like a film score, but turned out i hardly listened to it after it came out.

Downfall of Gaia – In the Rivers Bleak

Interesting mixture of Isis-esque metal and hints of doom and black metal. Album has some great moments. Nice album that feels a bit too long, i am very curious about their next album though.

Agruss – Morok

I was really impressed when this came out earlier this year. Black/death/doom from the Ukraine. Just didn’t listen to it as much as i probably should have.

Deftones – Koi No Yokan

They never really disappoint with their albums, even after all these years. They never really surprise either. A very solid album.

Dodecahedron – Dodecahedron

Somewhere between Deathspell Omega and Ulcerate. Great new band.

The Great Old Ones – Al Azif

A bit of a late entry and therefor not in my yearlist but this is a great atmospheric blackmetal album.

Soap & Skin – Narrow

Even ‘heavier’ than Lovetune for Vaccuum. Very impressive

C R O W N – Cosmogasm

Doom / sludge with a bit of a Godflesh feel to it. Listened to it quite a bit this year, but not as memorable after all. Still one of the better albums this year and looking forward seeing them at Roadburn next year.

Loma Prieta – I.V.

Fly by Night is a great song, the rest of the album is decent but unfortunately not as good in my opinion.
