Album of the (insert random period): Mamiffer – Mare Decendrii

This week is Roadburn week, atleast, it starts thursday and i’m really looking forward to it. I won’t be seeing all bands. But there are quite some bands i love to check out. To make sure i am not missing on something special, like i tend to do, i was checking out some of the less familiar bands, and i’m glad i did. They clash with Earth, a band i wanted to check out, but after hearing Mare Decendrii i think i will miss the beginning of Earth and check Mamiffer out first before going to see Earth.

Mamiffer is a project started by pianist Faith Coloccio from the bands Everlovely Lightningheart (i admit i had never heard of them before either). The first Mamiffer album was a solo project with quite a bit of guest appearances. These days Mamiffer has turned into a real band with ao. Aaron Turner (formerly of Isis) as an official band member. But the many guest appearances are still there. The list is too long to mention but members from bands like Isis, Zoroaster, Black Math Horseman, Secret Chiefs 3, Earth and Russian Circles are making an appearance.

Musically the music is based on the neo-classical piano playing of Coloccio and around her the different musicians experiment with more doom and post-rock influences. The music never gets really heavy or dark but is more sombre and sad. Mare Decendrii could be a soundtrack to a film noir. A very special album definitely and i’m looking forward to seeing them this friday.
