Album: Abraham – The Serpent, The Prophet and the Whore

The Serpent, the Prophet and the Whore is the second album by Swiss sludge/doom outfit Abraham. Their first album, An Eye On The Universe, came out about 2 years ago and from what i remember i was not too impressed. Not that it was a bad album but it drowned a bit in the immense sea of post-metal, doom, sludge releases that are coming out every month.

The Serpent, the Prophet and the Whore does a better job at sticking out in the sea, for one by sounding a lot meaner, angrier and bleaker compared to their previous album. Another thing that makes this album stand out is the addition of some weird, sometimes dissonant, riffs and rhythms that gives some songs (Start With A Heartbeat, The Great Dismemberement and Carcasses for instance) a bit of a Manes/Fleurety/Virus type of atmosphere. Don’t expect full on weirdness on this album though, as most songs on this album do fit in the aforementioned doom and sludge category but it sure makes things stand out from most bands in this genre and is what makes this album interesting.

As with quite a bit of the releases in this genre the vocals are a bit of a downside to this album. The growling and shouting is heavy and intense, but gets a bit monotonous after a while. The more desperate sounding vocals are balancing things out, but i wouldn’t mind them, or cleaner vocals, being used more often on a future release.

With The Serpent, the Prophet and the Whore Abraham have definitely released one of the more interesting albums in this genre so far this year in my opinion. Be sure to check out this album and pick up a copy at Pelagic Records.
